Why the numbers say “about”
Weights for cups and spoons come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s FoodData Central, a public-domain food database. USDA weighed US products, so each Indian staple is matched to the closest USDA record and the match is described next to it. Unit definitions come from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Bureau of Indian Standards and state revenue departments. Where we could not open an official source, we say so instead of guessing. Read how we convert.
